Elena Desserich, diagnosed with DIPG at age 5, was an artist through and through. She not only had a craft kit, but an entire attic as her canvas. Her favorite things to include in her artwork were hearts. One heart in painting in particular, titled "I Love You", was installed in the Picasso gallery at the Cincinnati Art Museum and became a city-wide exhibit for two weeks. Sweet Elena passed just nine months after that exhibit, and her love is forever an inspiration as part of The Cure Starts Now logo.
Since 2016, the HeArt Auction gives other children in the fight their opportunity to let their hearts shine. This fundraiser is annually helmed by Grace Desserich, Elena's sister, who refuses to sit on the sidelines while other children battle cancer. Each participating child is sent the materials to create their own masterpiece, and each original painting is then auctioned off online. All proceeds from the auction benefit pediatric brain cancer research to find the Homerun Cureā¢ for all cancers.
