The Nebraska Chapter of The Cure Starts Now was formed in memory of Madelyn Shumaker. Madelyn will be forever 8 years old to us. She was diagnosed with DIPG on January 26, 2015 and she earned her wings in December 2015. Maddie had the warmest heart and a deep soul. We witnessed her compassion grow as she got to know many children battling cancer. Even with her extensive interests, her family remained the center of her world. Despite her young age, she understood the concept of heaven and was prepared for it. Her greatest loves, after her family, were Pandas, her friends at Brownell-Talbot, her cat, Titan and her fish, Rosie. Maddie will remain an inspiration to all who have been touched by her. Raising money for pediatric brain cancer research as part of Race Against The Odds makes a difference for other kids in honor of Maddie. Thanks for helping us celebrate her life!
Jimmy Moran was a special kid. He loved to make people laugh. He always had a smile on his face. He loved to make up games, draw, play baseball, he was a black belt, loved to play with his dog, and was the best son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Jimmy made a to-do list during one of his hospital stays. One of the items on his list was “Be happy for no reason”. He lived that every day, up until he went to heaven on September 2, 2022. As hard as it is, we try to live by Jimmy’s words and find our own happiness. Right now, the best way we know how to do that is by working towards our goal of finding a cure for DIPG.
